The Brooklyn Nets may be sitting
at the bottom of the standings right now, but the organization appears to be
planning some big moves that could elevate them to future contender status.
The Nets are eyeing Milwaukee
Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo, according to NBA insider Marc Stein.
Rumors have it that Antetokounmpo could request a move from Milwaukee at some
point, and Brooklyn is reportedly in the running for the 30-year-old if he does
so in the future.
“A scenario that has been
mentioned again and again in conversations with opposing teams always ends at
the same point: The Nets have long been portrayed as a team determined to one
day get the commitment of Milwaukee’s Giannis Antetokounmpo, and continue to be
portrayed as that,” Stein wrote on his Substack.
The Nets have acquired a slew of
future draft picks, which could help offset the size of a potential trade for
Giannis. Antetokounmpo is under contract through the 2026-27 season and is
projected to make $54.1 million next season and $58.4 million the year after.
He also has a player option worth $62.8 million for the 2027-28 season, when he
will be 33 years old.
Still, Stein said the Nets are
excited about the prospect of signing him and are willing to do so if he plays
before his contract expires.
This season, Giannis is averaging 31.7 points, 11.9 rebounds and 6.1 assists per game. He is projected to make his ninth straight All-Star Game in 2025 and could also make his seventh straight All-NBA team.
